Considering adding a Newfoundland puppy to your family? — How about a whole new extended family?

Thinking about getting a Newfoundland Puppy? Your friends will say, “Oh my goodness! They are so big – – the shedding, the slobber, the poop – – Are you sure?”. It was with this warning in mind that Peter and I approached the home of the Bodnieks of Newfhill Kennels to talk about the possibility of a new puppy. We were met at the door by a party of 10 Newfoundland dogs and then a smiling Carol, making her way through the crowd to welcome us. We talked, laughed and learned about what life with Newfs was really like. While spending time with Carol, Ralph, Jacquie, Allan and Joseph learning about Newfs and the fun of carting and water rescue, I glanced back across the living room to see we were surrounded by a Newfoundland “carpet” of 10 amazing dogs. They were all curled up together and covering the entire huge living room — just hanging out with us. We knew then that life would never be the same! We met Nicodemus, Molly, Sooner, Dream, Angel, Renegade, Delilah, Quesa, Cruiser and beautiful Blossom. When we learned Blossom was to be the Mother of the next litter, we were thrilled.

We were made so welcome and Carol told us her Puppy Buyers became just like family – we’d see. We certainly did! We were invited to visit often and watch Blossom bloom. we met our new pup Thunder at 8 hours old and enjoyed many visits over the weeks as he grew – often asking Carol if she was sure she didn’t trade him with a much older dog – how could he have grown so much and gained 4 pounds in one week?

Carol and Ralph welcomed us into their home, showed us how to groom, suggested commands which were easily understood, and encouraged us to get to know our puppy. We were amazed to see the hand knitted coloured colours Carol made each week to fit their ever-expanding necks and read the detailed charts Ralph kept recording their daily weights and measurements. The entire litter thrived under the love and care of this amazing family. We’d come up to play and watch as as our new pup, Thunder, lovingly followed Carol around the garden and see her smile as she cuddled with him – this was was an exceptional example of a family socializing pups with love. If you are lucky enough to get a Newfhill Puppy, you are aren’t just getting an amazing, healthy, happy and socialized puppy, you are getting a whole new amazing family!
